Description:
LibreVNA is an open source two-port vector circuit analyzer that connects to a PC via a USB interface. The device is an RF module with basic computing capabilities, and the rest of the data processing takes place in a PC application. The PCB has three ADCs and one FPGA for all signal processing. The device is capable of measuring 10000 points with two ports within one second and has an effective dynamic range of 100 dB.
With two measurement ports, this vector circuit analyzer can be used to measure the full set of S-parameters (S11/S12/S21/S22). Although the hardware part of LibreVNA is designed as a VNA, the overall hardware architecture is so similar to that of a spectrum analyzer that simple two-channel spectrum measurements can be performed as well.
Architecture limitations:
The design features of LibreVNA, which is being developed as an open source project, impose some limitations:
-
- The resolution at the measuring port S12 is 10 dB worse than at the measuring port S21.
- In the frequency range above 3 GHz, the characteristics decrease, as a result, the isolation of the port is only 50 dB at the frequency of 6 GHz.
- In addition, below 1 MHz the performance degrades with decreasing frequency, and the effective dynamic range is reduced to 70 dB at 100 kHz.
- Output power may decrease below 1 MHz and above 3 GHz.
The use of high-precision calibrators allows to increase the accuracy of measurements.
